Heiligendamm - the White City by the Sea

The spa industry began in 1793 in the initially inconspicuous town of Heiligendamm. Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin commissioned architects to build an entire ensemble of representative guest and lodging houses for Heiligendamm. The architects preferred a classicist architectural style with antique elements such as columns, stucco reliefs and a snow-white facade. This architectural style soon found imitators.

The first German seaside resort in Heiligendamm was followed by other seaside resorts.
