Mecklenburg-Schwerin

Enchanted by Originality

Between the Baltic Sea, the Elbe and Lake Plauer See stretches a stretch of land whose natural diversity awakens the senses in its relaxing way, inspires the soul and is able to give the body new strength. Surprisingly close to the metropolises of Berlin and Hamburg and far away from the hustle and bustle, relaxation is waiting right outside the door.

Whether nature or culture lovers, whether Lewitz, Schaalsee or Schwerin Castle – once you arrive here, you will succumb to the region's charms. Hikers can explore the pristine beauty on foot or by bike on well-signposted trails. And there is another network of trails that attracts visitors to West Mecklenburg: the waterways. Water sports enthusiasts can paddle or sail along the rivers and lakes in a particularly relaxing way. The UNESCO biosphere reserves Schaalsee and Flusslandschaft Elbe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are home to a particularly diverse and varied flora and fauna. Beavers and otters also feel at home there and eagles circle in the sky.

The former ducal residences of Ludwigslust and Schwerin occupy a special position. In both cities, things are certainly a little classy. The state capital Schwerin has also developed into a widely appreciated shopping paradise and is worth a stroll through the lovingly restored alleyways for this reason alone. But even the smaller towns and villages offer authentic half-timbered and brick architecture for culture lovers.

The vacation experts for Mecklenburg Schwerin

Whether Lake Scenery or the Splendor of Castles

Schwerin

Anyone coming to visit Mecklenburg-Schwerin should plan a stay in Schwerin, the state capital. In addition to the famous Schwerin Castle and the surrounding Schwerin Lake and Burgsee, culture lovers get to see old half-timbered houses and an abundance of cultural monuments in the old town. A visit to the castle festival in the Old Garden is also recommended, which inspires the audience with opulent productions every year.

Ludwigslust

Ludwigslust is also a well-known vacation resort for those interested in culture and history, and is unparalleled in northern Germany. As the "Versailles of the North", the town and palace of Ludwigslust convey impressions from the time of the baroque regency. The epoch that gave Ludwigslust its present face is also celebrated at the annual Baroque Festival in spring and with a Baroque Advent market in the pre-Christmas season.

Wittenburg

The small town of Wittenburg was considered an important bastion and trading center in the Middle Ages, and its ramparts and fortifications have been preserved and can be visited to this day. Families and cultural vacationers also have the opportunity to get to know the world's most important foodstuff from a different perspective in the MehlWelten Museum in Wittenburg. Those who enjoy sports will find an indoor snow paradise to let off steam at the Alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg at -1°C all year round.

Monastery Town Rehna

The monastery town of Rehna offers peace and relaxation, which can be found, for example, behind the walls of the former Premonstratensian monastery. The monastery garden, the mill pond with adjacent park area as well as a Kneipp basin invite you to relax, regular art exhibitions and concerts provide cultural entertainment. The unspoiled nature around Rehna is known as a pilgrimage route and is ideal for extensive hiking tours from monastery to monastery.

Activities

on water, on land and on horseback

Boat Tours and Water Fun at Lake Plau

If you like to be in action, you will love Lake Plauer See. Sailboats, excursion boats, motorboats and yachts meet, surfers do their rounds - Lake Plauer See is a true paradise for swimming and water sports. Water sports enthusiasts who want to explore the 38-square-kilometer lake and its surrounding waters undisturbed can paddle across the lake on canoe tours lasting several days.

Cycling and Hiking Tours

The hilly landscape of Mecklenburg-Schwerin is ideal for extensive cycling and hiking tours. The cycling trail "Runde Acht" (Round Eight) around Lake Schwerin, for example, invites you to explore the area on a bicycle for 63 kilometers. Those who want to plan more than one day will find a wide landscape of forests, lakes and fields, where cranes and sea eagles are at home, on the five-day hiking tour Klosterdreieck between Schaalsee, Ratzeburg and Zarrentin.

Horseback Riding

Horse lovers are in good hands on vacation in Mecklenburg-Schwerin: riding and carriage trails such as the 170-kilometer-long Gestüt Trail lead from Redefin through idyllic villages and tranquil landscapes. The traditional Redefin State Stud provides insights into its successful breeding history on tours of the facility and presents the most beautiful animals at the annual stallion parade in the fall.

Mecklenburg-Schwerin - characterized by sights and destinations that stand the test of time

Schwerin Castle

Built in the mid-19th century, the region's landmark attracts visitors with its magnificent living quarters and throne room from the era of romantic historicism. The Meissen porcelain, which can be admired in the Schwerin castle collection, is also world-famous. Nestled in a picturesque park and lake landscape, it is a dreamlike destination for culture lovers and romantics.

The Lake(len)calm Schaalsee

Until 1990, the inner-German border ran through the middle of the lake, so that a diverse flora and fauna could develop undisturbed around the Schaalsee. As a UNESCO biosphere reserve, nature lovers, families and solo travelers come here to relax, hike or take a guided tour of the reserve with a ranger. The whitefish from the Schaalsee are a local delicacy that must be tried.

The Romantic Schwerin Lake

It is this charming mix of city life and proximity to water that makes Germany's third largest inland lake so special. Almost every spot around Schwerin's inner and outer lakes can be explored by excursion boats and sailing boats, but also by bike on well-developed bike paths. The lake is made for romantic hours, because the view of the fairy-tale castle in the evening glow is unique.

Ludwigslust Castle

Ludwigslust Palace, with its magnificent and lavishly restored rooms, is a symbol of the late Baroque and one of Mecklenburg-Schwerin's most famous sights. And yet many things here are not as they appear at first glance: the elegant marble panelling and graceful statues of the magnificent palace are in fact often made of papier-mâché, which went down in history as Ludwigslust Carton. Outside the castle walls, vacationers and families interested in history can find relaxation in the adjacent park with its cascades and avenues.

Alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg

Situated between Hamburg and Berlin, winter sports fans can expect skiing fun at its best all year round at the Alpincenter. At a mild -1°C, head to the indoor slope, which is used by experienced skiers and beginners alike.
