There is hardly a more relaxed way to explore a region than on the water. Whether paddling or with a motor: the Elde - at 120 kilometers the longest river in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - is a very good choice for this idyllic way of traveling. Especially because in addition to the fantastic nature, urban adventures also await. In short, do whatever you feel like doing. We have created a sensible master plan for vacation happiness.

Dock at your leisure and experience your vacation at your own pace. This is called water hiking. If you like, you can rent a temporary floating home in Lübz and look forward to a self-sufficient, free time on the water thanks to the Amelie, Katharina or Maria boats from River Holidays.

Sail from lock to lock (17 in total!) along the tranquil river from the fortress town of Dömitz on the Elbe to the gateway to the lake district in Plau am See.

It all starts in the fortified town of Dömitz

The small town of Dömitz is located where the Elde flows into the Elbe. Mooring in the harbor is highly recommended, as a fantastic adventure awaits here in the triangle of Germany.

Dömitz lies between Lower Saxony and Brandenburg in the picturesque Elbe floodplain of Mecklenburg. The fortress town has numerous picturesque half-timbered houses and the Johanniskirche, a neo-Gothic basilica. How about a tour of the town of Dömitz? You can find one in the EntdeckerRouten app, for example. Three kilometers between dyke and monument. Along the fortress, the town hall square and the harbor into the old town center. With fantastic views of the UNESCO Elbe Biosphere Reserve and lots of interesting facts about the 16th century lowland fortress. History you can touch so to speak.

Please enter the Neustadt-Glewe harbor slowly and keep your eyes peeled. Canoeists moor their two-seaters, a lady stretches out her cushion on the bow of her houseboat, two children on a scooter make their way along the paths next to the lush green meadows. It's idyllic here. You just want to be here. That's why the moorings in the boat harbor are so popular.

One reason for its popularity is the impressive backdrop of the castle. It stands fortified in the heart of the picturesque small town of Neustadt-Glewe and is an impressive relic from the early 14th century. The massive walls and towers tell stories from times long past, when knights shaped life at the castle. But wait, the real anecdotes are told enthusiastically by castle museum director Britta Kley. Life at the medieval castle comes to life in the former ducal residence. From wall paintings from the Gothic and Renaissance periods to the remains of a medieval hot-air heating system, a fascinating piece of history is revealed here.

Stories with history in the "Alte Burg"

On the upper floor, visitors love the Knights' Hall with its long table. The special feature: Interesting facts are served up here. For example, the information that almond milk and chickpeas were already among the favorite foods in the County of Schwerin in the Middle Ages.

Nanu. What's that rustling in the castle tower? Britta Kley explains that a kestrel has made itself at home in the old vault. The odd jackdaw also drops by. Barn owls have made themselves at home in the ancient chambers over the past year. Just like the bats, which love the ancient beams.

Visitors can easily understand this love. The »Old Castle« is one of the best-preserved castles in Mecklenburg and offers a fantastic panorama, especially from the top of the tower. Of nature, the harbor and your own temporary floating home. If you listen carefully, you will probably hear the gentle lapping of the Elde. The best soundtrack to the exciting castle stories.

Kulturmühle Parchim: An experience for all the senses

The next day begins with the first rays of sunshine dancing across the glistening water. The soft murmur of the Elde and the chirping of the birds gently wake you up.

The Kulturmähle is located in the middle of the idyllic landscape of Mecklenburg and yet right next to the historic town of Parchim. It is a place where culture, creativity and culinary delights merge harmoniously. This charming cultural center is located in a restored former mill and is entertainment on several levels. In the truest sense of the word.

Theater, history and culinary delights

Great cinema might be the first thing you think of when you enter the museum. An imposing building, clear architecture, a beautiful feel-good atmosphere in a place where art and local history play an equally important role. The first floor is home to the Junge Staatstheater, which not only performs plays for children, but also pop-modern plays for adults, such as "Sophia, Death and I" by musician Thees Uhlmann, which every young-at-heart soul will find lovingly staged. The best thing is: tickets do not have to be booked months in advance. Spontaneity usually has a place in the theater here.

And how nice it is when the generations mingle in the foyer. Just like in the adjoining Mahlwerk restaurant. An inclusive restaurant where everyone is welcome. As guests and as part of the team. Whether for coffee and pear yoghurt cake or a hibiscus-lime spritz. And also the Mahlwerk classic, the burger, which is served here with love. It's always worth stopping by and the terrace is right on the Elde. If you like, you can keep a watchful eye on your houseboat, which is moored on the other side of the river, while you eat.

Parchim's city history – a real experience

Wonderful to spend the evening here and then fall straight into your bunk. But not without admiring the exhibition. Really. Admire it. Because there is an incredible amount of craftsmanship in every detail. Whether you are a child or a senior citizen, from the region or a local guest, everyone will be entertained in the permanent exhibition at the Kulturmühle Parchim, where the history of the town is told in a lively and creative way. Be sure to bring time with you, because you can touch, listen and smell to understand the exhibition. So we have all the senses together in the Kulturmühle

Reaching for the stars in Lübz

Lübz is verzückt. This can be seen as soon as you arrive at the water hiking rest area, where the Amtsturm tower peers picturesquely out between the trees. The small town also looks back on more than 700 years of history. So, get ready for an exciting day trip,

What about a trip into space? Between May and September, the Lübzer Planetarium provides orientation in the starry sky. From asteroids to dwarf planets, guided tours are offered here that will leave you amazed.

The Amtsturm tastes good‘s

The Amtsturm is not quite as high up. After all, it is one of the best-preserved fortified towers in Germany. It not only houses the city museum, but also the best restaurant in the city, Alter Amtsturm, with a traditional home-style kitchen.

Apropos culinary delights. Lübz is known for its art of brewing. So it's important to pack a few bottles. There will be plenty of opportunities to taste water, malt, hops and tradition on the tour.

Getting up to speed in Plau am See

»Denn man tau«, as they say in Platt, when’it starts. When the duffel bag is packed full and the water hiking crew is ready for the last vacation adventure along the Elde. But maybe, just maybe, this is where it really starts, because anchoring on the picturesque shores of the climatic health resort of Plau am See is also an invitation to a vast water landscape that lies at the helm of every captain here: the Mecklenburg Lake District.

When you open your eyes in the houseboat in the morning, you are greeted by the play of light on the lake. Drinking coffee while gently bobbing and making plans. Which wave would you like to ride through the day on today? Plau certainly has plenty of entertainment on offer.

Technology meets honey in Plau

„On wave 400 meters“ – thus began the first official radio program in Germany on 29 October 1923. And at the castle museum in Plau, you can step into the radio time machine. How does music actually get into our kitchens through the radio? And how has radio changed over this period of time? An exhibition that inspires not only through technology.

The highlight of the city is the 13-metre-long lifting bridge, which you should definitely take a closer look at before heading to the beekeeping exhibition. Here you can find the perfect souvenirs for your loved ones and all kinds of interesting facts about bees. After all, around 300 bee colonies collect their nectar here. What a wonder of nature!

And in the evening, while enjoying a snack (now with fresh honey!) between bow and stern, the idyll is also the perfect TV program. Even the sky is set for entertainment: Cloud cinema included. Absolutely worth seeing!
