The dawn can already be guessed. The air is clear and damp. Thick fog covers the landscape. Even before the sun rises, nature photographer Mario Müller is on his way to Pramort, the easternmost tip of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. Mario knows that the right timing is crucial for the perfect picture. Equipped with a tripod, camera and telephoto lens, he takes up position in his lookout in the darkness of an autumn morning. It's worth getting up early, because a special natural spectacle awaits the professional photographer and his pupils out here: the departure of the cranes.
Every fall, tens of thousands of these impressive birds gather in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Landscape National Park in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania before they migrate to their wintering grounds in the south of Germany, France and Spain. The region on the Baltic coast between Rostock and Stralsund is one of the largest resting places in the whole of Germany. »The crane migration reaches its peak in mid-October, when we sometimes have up to 70,000 birds here«, explains Mario.
The Bodden landscape and the numerous shallow water areas make the peninsula an ideal refuge for the shy birds. While they forage in the fields during the day, they gather densely in the water landscape after sunset. Standing in knee-deep water, they are safe from predators such as foxes or raccoon dogs, which don't like to get their paws wet. The shallow water zone in front of the white dunes of Pramort is one of the cranes' favorite roosting places. Thousands of birds spend the night here under the protection of the community. The area is also located in the core zone of the national park, so the birds are also protected from humans. There is hardly any other place like this in Germany«, explains Mario.
