The lush green of the forests and the brilliant white of the chalk cliffs have captivated and inspired artists for centuries. The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival put the string quartet at the center of the late summer „Island Music" from 14 to 16 September 2022 and brought music to the most beautiful places on the island. With the international „Eliot Quartet", the British „Gildas Quartet" and the award-winning „Simply Quartet", three up-and-coming young ensembles presented themselves in the spirit of the „royal class of chamber music". In the midst of the picturesque landscape, masterpieces of the repertoire were on the program over three days, including works by Joseph Haydn, the proverbial „father of the string quartet", Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven through to Erich Wolfgang Korngold and the Austrian Julia Lacherstorfer.

Visitors were able to get to know the musicians of the Eliot Quartet personally on a tour of the island: the excursion began with a short concert in the Sassnitz Kurmuschel and was rounded off with a subsequent hike through the unique beech forests on the Königsstuhl and a visit to the National Park Center. The string quartet played at numerous well-known and enchanted locations on the island of Rügen, such as the Putbusser Theater and Marstall, the Selliner Seebrücke, the Boldevitzer Kapelle of the Gutshaus and the Kunstscheune in Vaschvitz, celebrating a festival of chamber music together with the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
