West Beach

  • Freely accessible at any time
  • 18375 Born a. Darß

Nowhere on the Baltic coast do land erosion and land formation take place so dynamically, in such a short time and in such a confined space as in the National Park of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft. The west beach, bordering directly on the Darß forest, is one of the most vivid examples of this. Due to its wildness and remoteness, it has been declared one of the most beautiful beaches in Germany and Europe several times. Arte even nominated it as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world.

Erratic boulder garden Carwitz

  • Freely accessible at any time
  • OT Carwitz, Findlingsgarten, 17258 Feldberger Seenlandschaft

The fact that the Feldberg lake landscape has been shaped by the ice age is noticed quite quickly. Just before Carwitz, near the border between Mecklenburg and Brandenburg, however, you see something very special: a stone mammoth. Here, committed citizens have prevented an open-cast gravel mine, in whose place an erratic boulder garden has now been created.

Paradise Garden Lüttenhagen

  • OT Lüttenhagen, Paradiesgarten Lüttenhagen, 17258 Feldberger Seenlandschaft

The starting point of the tour is the parking lot above the Sassnitz Zoo in Stubbenkammerstraße. From the end of Weddingstraße, the tour continues along the steep coast with a view of the Baltic Sea. Crossing the Lenzer Bach, the hikers reach the Wissower Klinken, which were probably the model for the famous painting "Chalk cliffs on Rügen" by Caspar David Friedrich. Just behind them, the World Heritage Forum with lots of background information on the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ancient Beech Forests" and a bistro invites you to take a short break. The path continues past the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Sicht with many impressive views of the chalk coast. Only a little later, nature lovers reach the Kieler Bach, which plunges into the Baltic Sea as a waterfall.

On the way to the Königsstuhl, three staircases offer the opportunity to descend to the gravel shore of the Baltic Sea to marvel at the cliff in all its splendor from the shore and collect fossils. Afterwards, however, you should climb back up to the high shore path, as there is a risk of chalk erosion at various points along the shore.

Once at the Königsstuhl, the famous chalk cliffs can first be admired from Victoria View. Afterwards, a visit to the National Park Center KÖNIGSSTUHL is recommended to learn all background information about the development of the Rügen chalk coast and its flora and fauna. If the visit takes longer than planned, it is possible to take a bus from the National Park Center back to Sassnitz or continue hiking the Hochuferweg to Lohme. From there, a bus will also take you back to Sassnitz.

By the way, the Hochuferweg Jasmund was chosen in 2012 by the jury of the hiking magazine as the third most beautiful hiking trail in Germany in the category of day tours and was able to prevail against medium and high mountain trails. A hike by the sea is simply something different.... Try it out!
