College buildings I and II

  • Schloßstraße, 19053 Schwerin

The College Building I in Schwerin, close to the castle and facing Schloßstraße, was built on the orders of Friedrich Franz I. The classicist three-winged complex impresses with a terraced courtyard of honor, an impressive portal and a magnificent staircase. Materials from the former Franciscan monastery may have been used in its construction. The adjoining Kollegiengebäude II, built between 1890 and 1892 by Georg Daniel, is connected by a three-part triumphal arch. It features a central inner courtyard, stucco ceilings and preserved door systems. Both buildings are important examples of classicist architecture in Schwerin.

Rechlin Wall

  • Freely accessible at any time
  • Mauerstraße, 17248 Rechlin

Rechlin's development is closely linked to aviation technology. Already during the First World War, a railroad connection was built and an aviation testing and training institute was handed over. All activities come to a standstill as a result of the Treaty of Versailles. It was not until 1934 that the site was rapidly expanded to become the largest test site of the German Air Force on the Müritz. Housing estates (today Rechlin and Rechlin-Nord) with the corresponding infrastructure were built, and the Mirower Canal and the Claassee-Müritz link were constructed. The village acquires its settlement structure, which is atypical for a Mecklenburg village.

Friends of the Aviation Museum Rechlin e.V.

  • Am Claassee, 17248 Rechlin Nord

"On a total of 15,000 m2 of museum space, many dedicated members of both associations strive to constantly add new exhibits and improve the offerings for our museum visitors. We often come up against personnel and financial limits, as our museum is supported solely by visitor income and donations. One of our biggest supporters is our local authority, which, as the owner of the museum property, is providing the financial framework for the renovation of the historic building complex with its inner courtyard as well as the planned addition of a 1300m2 hall for large objects. With its planned completion in the fall of 2016, there will be space for more aircraft in the new halls. The museum is currently negotiating with a major lender for the loan of up to 12 unique aircraft to Rechlin, the transportation, assembly and insurance of which our association will have to manage both financially and in terms of personnel.

The starting point of the tour is the parking lot above the Sassnitz Zoo in Stubbenkammerstraße. From the end of Weddingstraße, the tour continues along the steep coast with a view of the Baltic Sea. Crossing the Lenzer Bach, the hikers reach the Wissower Klinken, which were probably the model for the famous painting "Chalk cliffs on Rügen" by Caspar David Friedrich. Just behind them, the World Heritage Forum with lots of background information on the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ancient Beech Forests" and a bistro invites you to take a short break. The path continues past the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Sicht with many impressive views of the chalk coast. Only a little later, nature lovers reach the Kieler Bach, which plunges into the Baltic Sea as a waterfall.

On the way to the Königsstuhl, three staircases offer the opportunity to descend to the gravel shore of the Baltic Sea to marvel at the cliff in all its splendor from the shore and collect fossils. Afterwards, however, you should climb back up to the high shore path, as there is a risk of chalk erosion at various points along the shore.

Once at the Königsstuhl, the famous chalk cliffs can first be admired from Victoria View. Afterwards, a visit to the National Park Center KÖNIGSSTUHL is recommended to learn all background information about the development of the Rügen chalk coast and its flora and fauna. If the visit takes longer than planned, it is possible to take a bus from the National Park Center back to Sassnitz or continue hiking the Hochuferweg to Lohme. From there, a bus will also take you back to Sassnitz.

By the way, the Hochuferweg Jasmund was chosen in 2012 by the jury of the hiking magazine as the third most beautiful hiking trail in Germany in the category of day tours and was able to prevail against medium and high mountain trails. A hike by the sea is simply something different.... Try it out!
