Grevesmühlen becomes a pilot town for a dementia-friendly municipality

Grevesmühlen - Staying healthy is, of course, a wish that everyone has for themselves. It is therefore also an omnipresent topic of urban development, especially in view of the fact that our population is getting older on average and lifestyles are constantly changing. The topic of dementia plays a particularly important role here, as the number of people affected is constantly increasing and the burden on relatives stands out. This also represents a new challenge for medical care, nursing care, associations, but also for landlords and urban planners.

In purely statistical terms, it can be assumed that around 300 people in Grevesmühlen are affected, have either fallen ill or will be affected by this disease - usually gradually - in the near future. We can draw on an existing network that has been running various health promotion projects in our town for several years. Among other things, we established the care finder, the health brochure and held our first senior citizens' conference before coronavirus.

The next major event for the "Healthy City of Grevesmühlen" is now planned for January 18, 2024 - a health conference entitled "Grevesmühlen Active. Healthy. - Dementia-friendly town" with specialist presentations, panel discussions and information opportunities. Not only senior citizens, but also relatives, companies in the healthcare industry and care sector, doctors and, last but not least, our clubs and associations are to be addressed. A small trade fair will also be integrated, where all healthcare providers can present themselves.

In preparation for this, we would like to actively involve all stakeholders, such as citizens, tradespeople, care facilities, companies and more, in the development process and listen to their ideas. To this end, there will now be an official workshop for each of 4 areas of action at the end of the year. These meetings are open to all interested parties who want to campaign for a dementia-friendly community and develop concrete measures. The aim is to work out how the municipality will deal with dementia in the future and what services and solutions it can offer.

The working meetings are open to all interested parties who would like to contribute ideas for a dementia-friendly town of Grevesmühlen and share their previous experiences. This means that in addition to dementia sufferers and representatives of institutions, private caregiving relatives, friends and acquaintances are also welcome to attend. The results of the working groups will then be presented by the respective group leaders at the health conference on January 18, 2024 in Grevesmühlen.

Participation in the workshops is free of charge. The group leaders are looking forward to active participation.
