based on Arthur Miller, performed by the youth theater group "WILDE 14"
Salem / New England, 1692:
Actually, they just wanted to have some fun, not to tremble in fear of God and be crushed by strict Puritan church laws. They danced - at night... in the woods...
That alone is bad enough - but something else must have happened: the next day, some of them are stricken with a strange illness for which no natural cause can be found. That can only mean one thing: the devil has a hand in it!
And what does Abigail Williams - Pastor Parris' niece - have to do with all this? What is her real interest when she indiscriminately accuses people in the community of being in league with evil spirits? An expert is hired to get to the bottom of what's happening and to stamp out the devil with a vengeance: religious mania, intrigue, obsession with power and personal interests ultimately lead to disaster. Perhaps everyone should have listened more to the experienced midwife Rebecca:
"A childlike spirit is just like a child. You can't catch it by running after it. You have to stand still and then, out of love, it comes back of its own accord."
Arthur Miller's "Witch Hunt" is based on the actual witch trials in Salem in 1692. Unlike in Europe, there had only been isolated witch hunts in the North American colonies until then.
Miller's socially and chronologically critical dramas are directed against the so-called American way of life, in which professional success takes center stage. He repeatedly emphasized the ethical obligations of the individual.
