Late at night, history professor George and his slightly older wife Martha come home from a party on the university campus. To her husband's surprise, the heavily inebriated Martha has invited guests: Nick, a young biology professor, and his wife Putzi. The newlyweds arrive soon afterwards and want to be entertained. What begins with sophisticated small talk escalates into a bitter game of humiliation in a merciless relationship war that symbolizes the loss of all illusions. Edward Albee's most famous play is more than just a relationship drama. It is a study of interpersonal communication. The characters fluctuate between closeness and distance, attachment and hatred. In a true tour de force, the participants give each other nothing.
This modern classic became world-famous not least thanks to the congenial portrayal of the two main roles by the acting couple Elisabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the 1966 film version of the same name.
