You can determine rocks yourself on "Geotope Day"
Do you collect rocks and don't really know what they are? On the occasion of "Geotope Day", geologist Bastian Bruckhoff, an employee of the Natural History Collections for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, will shed some light on your rocks. But first, he will give a basic introduction to rock identification, including a look at the Müritzeum's geological collection. You will learn about the most important rock-forming minerals, the characteristics of the rock groups and their formation. With this new knowledge, you will go into the rock consultation hour. Here you will learn how to independently identify the finds you have brought with you under the supervision of an expert on site.
Due to the limited number of participants, it is necessary to register by noon the day before on 03991 633 680. And then don't forget to bring your favorite stone!
The "Geotope Day" goes back to an initiative of the Academy for Geosciences and Geotechnologies e.V. and is now organized annually throughout Germany by the GEOTOP section of the German Society for Geosciences (DGG), together with the Academy of Geosciences in Hanover (AGH) and the Palaeontological Society (PG). Similar to the Open Monument Day, geological facts, special geological outcrops, landscape forms, boulders, springs and caves, the importance of geotopes and geotope protection are to be brought closer to interested parties.
