Udo Hopp Biodiversity - Treasures in the Feldberg Lake District Nature Park - Photography
Udo H. Hopp has lived in the Feldberg area since 1945 and worked here for many years as a specialist teacher and also as an educational assistant at the Young Naturalists' Station. From an early age, he was enthusiastic about plants and mushrooms, as well as large and small animals.
Since 1981, he has been supporting and advising locals and guests in Feldberg as a volunteer mushroom consultant and passes on his knowledge and experience on hikes and lectures. He also opened an exhibition in the mushroom advice center in 2018 with his nature photos and self-made mushroom sculptures. Since retiring, Udo Hopp has returned to identifying and recording insect species in addition to mushroom identification. He has published many of his discoveries in the "Labus" series of the NABU regional association MST, focusing on the identification and documentation of living animals. In 2022 and 2023 alone, he identified over 2,000 beetles and took several photos of them. He succeeded in identifying 450 beetle species, three of which were first records for MV. Udo Hopp has also made these important findings and identification results available to the nature park, with which he has been working closely for a long time.
The exhibition in the Haus des Gastes shows a small selection of photos taken during the identification work. They document many features relevant to the identification of the insect and fungus species on display and are sometimes supplemented with interesting facts. There are also photos of other animals, so that the exhibition impressively illustrates the great biodiversity of our Feldberg lake landscape. It invites adults and children, locals and guests to embark on a careful search for these wonderful natural treasures in our surroundings.
