Ultimate Frisbee tournament "Goldstrand"
The "Goldstrand" ultimate frisbee tournament in Karlshagen has never been as international as this year: teams from Stockholm, Amsterdam, London, Newcastle and Bergen in Norway make the longest journey to Karlshagen beach to take part in the almost contactless competition in the north of Usedom at the end of September.
Many other teams with illustrious names such as "Zandercats", "TeKielas", "Griffin's Lehre", "Scooba Libre" and the defending champions "Dickes B" from Berlin will also be competing in this fascinating team sport, which requires a great deal of technical skill and stamina.
175 grams light, 3 cm flat and up to 100 kilometers per hour fast are the frisbee discs around which everything revolves for the 200 participants this weekend in the Baltic resort. The competition in one of the fastest sports in the world will be held on the sandy beach (10 O) from 9:30 am on Saturday and Sunday: hot duels with fast discs are guaranteed!
Five team players compete for victory in 40-minute games on a playing field that is roughly the size of a soccer pitch cut in half lengthways.
The Karlshagen tournament is one of only three frisbee tournaments in Germany to be held on a "real beach", along with those in Warnemünde and Kiel.
For those who are not yet familiar with the sport, there are plenty of frisbee discs to try out at the Karlshagen tournament site, including tips from professionals on how to use them in daily workshops. You can also try your hand at spikeball or throw at disc golf baskets.
By the way: Ultimate Frisbee does not involve a referee, fairness is paramount. The players themselves are responsible for adhering to the rules. The player who has been fouled indicates illegal actions by calling a foul. The game is interrupted. The players then decide together whether a foul has actually been committed. If so, the disadvantaged team receives the frisbee, if not, the last move is repeated.
