In the reading performance format, the Hinterlandbühne Rügen brings heavyweight works of world literature to life in an entertaining and scenic way. The "thick books on fire #3" are dedicated to Tolstoy & War and Peace.
In his novel "War and Peace", Tolstoy deals with Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812. He is driven by questions that we too must ask and answer anew today.
What force sets peoples in motion? What is power? How is it that millions of people commit crimes, wars and murders together? What are the causes of this behavior? Tolstoy looks at the "great" and the "small" people of his era and recognizes that greatness and chance, which historians like to regard as "movers", are not the actual "movers". He seeks and finds the conditions for war within each individual person and traces the effects and causes in each of the characters in the novel in a multi-layered way. He touchingly interweaves individual fates from all social classes and places them in the context of current events.
With the format of the reading performance, the Hinterlandbühne wants to make you want to take the "thick books" out of the bookcase again and browse through them yourself, because of course we can only grasp a corner of the work in one evening. The reading performance in this edition of "dicken bücher am feuer #3" will be complemented by the "TolstoiTalks" on April 13 and April 27, in which we will focus on the author and the discussion of the topic.
