Reading with Dr. Birgit Poppe as part of the 23rd Ahrenshoop Literature Days
Caroline Bommer marries the painter Caspar David Friedrich in Dresden in 1818, full of hope. Their honeymoon took them to Friedrich's home in northern Germany, where the famous painting "Chalk Cliffs on Rügen" was created. The painting "Woman at the Window" shows Caroline in the Dresden studio - but only from behind, he never paints a portrait of her. Today, Caspar David Friedrich is considered the greatest artist of German Romanticism, but at the time his melancholic, mystical landscape painting was controversial. His lack of success made him bitter and his gloom troubled his family. The novel tells the story of his marriage to an extremely talented, sensitive but also depressive man who, despite his longing for love, lives above all for his art. Caroline sticks by him throughout her life, experiencing happiness and suffering with him.
Dr. Birgit Poppe, born in Kleve, studied art history and German studies in Bochum and Bonn and wrote her doctoral thesis on "Leipzig Painting". She focuses on art and culture in the 19th and 20th centuries, from Romanticism to Expressionism, as well as the life and work of female artists. She has published biographies of artists and women artists as well as travel guides. The freelance author was a research assistant at museums and has been a lecturer in art and cultural history for more than 30 years.
