The exhibition presents paintings and poems by Johannes Helm
The psychologist Dr. habil. Johannes Helm, born in Schlawa/Silesia in 1927, was head of the Department of Clinical Psychology at Humboldt University in Berlin until 1986. He began painting - almost by chance - in 1972. Over the years, the self-taught artist devoted himself more and more intensively to painting. His pictures take up motifs from the Mecklenburg landscape, the course of the year and incidents of village life. In the tradition of naive painting, they reveal a unique, humorous, often melancholy world. In poems and texts written since 1976, Johannes Helm also reflects the tangible world in his inner gaze and verse.
Johannes Helm has lived with his wife, the psychologist and writer Helga Schubert, in Neu Meteln near Schwerin for many years. Here the couple opened a gallery in their garden. The couple exhibited well over 1000 pictures in the legendary "Bilderwechseln" ("Changing Pictures"). The Schwerin exhibition now presents paintings and poems by Johannes Helm from these happy years of painting.
