In 2024, the Friedrich exhibitions at the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin will present a comprehensive retrospective of the important German painter Caspar David Friedrich. The exhibitions will showcase a variety of his iconic works, including "Monk by the Sea" and "The Sea of Ice", and offer visitors a deep insight into Friedrich's unique contribution to 19th century Romantic landscape painting. With a careful selection of paintings, sketches and prints, the exhibitions provide a comprehensive understanding of Friedrich's artistic oeuvre and his profound impact on art history. The two curators Markus Bertsch (Hamburger Kunsthalle) and Birgit Verwiebe (Alte Nationalgalerie) provide exclusive insights into the conception of these exhibitions.
Markus Bertsch is an art historian and has been head of the 19th century collection at the Hamburger Kunsthalle since 2014. He has organized thematic and monographic exhibitions on 19th century art, including Making History. Hans Makart and the Salon Painting of the 19th Century (2020), Caspar David Friedrich. Art for a New Era (2023/24).
Birgit Verwiebe is an art historian and has been at the Nationalgalerie Berlin since 1988. She is curator of paintings from the first half of the 19th century and of the exhibition Caspar David Friedrich. Infinite Landscapes, which was on display at the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin from April 19 - August 4, 2024.
