Till Hein, science journalist and author from Berlin, reads from his "mare" seahorse non-fiction book "Crazy Horse" and presents exciting research findings and funny anecdotes about the only animals in the world where the males get pregnant. Graceful dancers, masters of camouflage and romantic lovers, but also hard of hearing wolverines, moody curmudgeons and slow lazybones: seahorses are all that and more. The little fish are not only found in seagrass meadows and mangrove forests, but also in chess games and Greek legends - and how did they end up on children's swimsuits, coins and toilet bowls from ancient Rome? What makes them first-class hunters despite their sluggishness, why is an area of the brain named after them, how can they help us sleep better and even inspire robotics? Till Hein, who also works for the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung", "Welt am Sonntag", "Spiegel GESCHICHTE" and "Das Magazin", tells of curious findings from current research in an entertaining and informative way, gets to the bottom of myths and reveals secrets about the bizarre horses of the sea.
Till Hein, born in 1969, studied modern general history, literature and Russian in Basel and Vienna. In 1996/1997, he completed journalistic training at the Austrian news magazine "profil" in Vienna. From 1999 to 2001, he was an editorial assistant at "SZ-Magazin" in Munich. He has been a freelance science journalist and author in Berlin since May 2002 and writes for "mare", "NZZ am Sonntag", "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" and "Das Magazin", among others. He is a great friend of fish and has portrayed numerous exciting finned creatures for "mare", the magazine of the seas, in recent years. "Crazy Horse", about "the dazzling life of seahorses", is his second book.
