Groovy things on many strings
Stephan Bormann is one of the most versatile German guitarists. He has toured successfully for over 20 years with the Cristin Claas Trio, now the Songland Trio, Hands On Strings, the 10String Orchestra and, following his successful solo debut "Over The Years", can now be experienced live on the new album "Spaces".
A wealth of new music has been created as a guitaristic reflection on the special last few years. Some of the songs are inspired by different cultural areas, others are heartfelt tributes to long-term idols Pat Metheny and Sting or dedicated to people close to them in a touching way.
Stephan Bormann's arrangements reflect the sound aesthetics of a fingerstylist as well as the approach of a jazz musician to give each piece an everlasting freshness through the freedom to improvise. The enormous variety of the instrument's expressive possibilities awakened his desire to use exotic aliquot, baritone and octave guitars in addition to the familiar nylon or steel string guitars. Stephan Bormann's close proximity to the music of America, Scandinavia, Africa and Brazil shows him to be a world traveler on the guitar, adept in many styles and familiar with the most diverse facets of the instrument.
He has worked as a sideman with various artists and has performed in concert with Nils Landgren, Till Brönner, the Klazz Brothers, the Leipzig Big Band, Günther Fischer and many others.
Stephan Bormann has been teaching at the Dresden University of Music since 1994, where he is a professor of jazz/rock/pop guitar. Workshops have taken him to numerous cities in Germany as well as to Italy, France, Austria, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and the USA.
