The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Musical play based on the play by Charlotte Karoline Birch-Pfeiffer
freely adapted from the novel "Notre Dame de Paris" by Victor Hugo
newly adapted by Jens Wassermann
The story takes us back to Paris in 1482. Many years earlier, the archdeacon Claude Frollo found a small bundle on the steps of Notre Dame. When he saw the child wrapped in it, he believed it was a temptation from hell because of its ugliness. To atone, he took the child, raised it, made it the cathedral's bell ringer and named it Quasimodo. 23 years later, at the height of the annual Fools' Festival, Quasimodo was elected King of the Fools. At this festival, the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda attracts everyone's attention with her dancing. Frollo falls for her instantly. Quasimodo also falls in love with Esmeralda.
But she herself has fallen madly in love with Phoebus, a captain of the royal bodyguard. When they meet at night, Phoebus is stabbed to death by the jealous Frollo, who escapes unrecognized. Esmeralda is accused of murder. Now it is up to Quasimodo to free Esmeralda...
The world-famous story of the disfigured hunchback and the beautiful Esmeralda in front of the mighty Notre Dame has touched many people for generations.
Director Robert Frank, who already successfully staged the musical "Cabaret" in 2022 and Schiller's drama "Maria Stuart" in 2023 for the Sonnentor Theaterfestival, brings the classic to the stage of the Ekhof Theater, Gotha and the Sonnentor Hof, Babke in his own version of the Sonnentor Theaterfestival with outstanding actors as a popular and imaginative production.
Atmospheric live music provides additional accents and brings the historical period of the 15th century to life in an even more atmospheric and passionate way.
