On 05 July 2017, the research vessel "Ludwig Prandtl" of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht will moor in Barth harbor from 12:00 to 21:00 and, in cooperation with the Vorpommern National Park Authority, invites visitors to experience marine research up close.
In keeping with the theme of the year chosen by the National Park Authority, "MeerWildnis", the research vessel "Ludwig Prandtl" is stopping in the port of Barth on its ninth tour of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Interested visitors are invited on Wednesday to get acquainted with the coastal research of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and to learn more about the coastal habitat. The goal of the "Research at Anchor" tour is to raise awareness of the diverse uses of coastal regions and the associated impacts on the habitat among locals and decision-makers, and to present scientific facts.
To this end, from 12:00 to 18:00, researchers and crew of the "Ludwig Prandtl" will be on hand at the "Open Ship" to answer questions, explain the scientific equipment on board and provide an overview of the Helmholtz Center's research.
Afterwards, starting at 7:00 p.m., the tour will move over to the Schipperschuppen at Barther Hafen, where first the scientist Dr. Marcus Reckermann will give a lecture on the topic "The Baltic Sea in Climate Change". This will deal with the special and currently changing climatic conditions of the Baltic Sea region and explain how and why the climate is changing. Afterwards the National Park Ranger Lutz Storm will take the guests on a picture tour through the National Park of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft. In his lecture "Small excursion into a large Baltic Sea National Park", he too will shed light on the constantly changing conditions in the coastal habitat.
