The grandmother of siblings Kai and Gerda is visited one winter evening by an unfriendly stranger who wants her roses to sell them on at a high price. The grandmother refuses, however, as the flowers are a gift from the storyteller and gifts should not be sold. The stranger gets angry and wants to complain to his mistress, the Snow Queen. She appears shortly afterwards and offers Kai a life of eternal prosperity if he comes with her. But Kai doesn't want to. The Snow Queen gives him a kiss goodbye, which turns the boy's heart into a lump of ice. Kai is kidnapped. When he still hasn't returned in the spring, Gerda sets off in search of her brother ...
