Learn how to prune using the sustainable Öschberg method on a two-day fruit tree pruning course with certified fruit tree nurseryman Mirko Lunau.

Every summer there is great anticipation in the gardens. At last, cherries, apples, pears, quinces and plums can be harvested. The hobby gardeners had to do almost nothing. The bees, the sun and the rain took care of everything all by themselves. But at some point, every gardening enthusiast has to do something... pruning. It sounds brutal and may seem too complicated for many, but it is necessary if the harvest is to remain plentiful in the future.

This is why Mirko Lunau offers annual courses on pruning fruit trees at the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum. On February 23 and 24, hobby gardeners can learn a lot about fruit tree care from the experienced Demeter beekeeper and certified fruit tree keeper and, above all, gain extensive practical experience. Lunau cultivates around 150 standard fruit trees himself and also prunes several hundred trees for local authorities, public institutions and private individuals in the Schwerin region. His technique is based on the so-called Öschberg method, which results in a stable tree framework, a balanced relationship between wood and fruit and excellent fruit quality.

Course participants can learn a lot about planting, variety selection, growth laws, pruning techniques, tools and safety during a Zoom conference on February 23. On February 24, course participants can spend a whole day working on the fruit trees on the grounds of the open-air museum in Schwerin-Mueß. Trees and shrubs can be pruned in small groups of 2 to 3 people.

Many museum visitors can sample the Mueß harvest in summer, when delicious apple juice and tasty homemade cakes are once again available in the museum café.

Course 2024:

  • Theory (zoom conference): Friday, 23.02.2024, 15:00 - 20:00. Cost: 85 EURO.
  • Practice in the Mueßer Freilichtmuseum: Saturday, 24.02.2024, 10:00 - 16:30. Cost: 85 EURO.
