The further Gu is drawn into the story in search of the truth, the more uncertain his value system seems to him and his world begins to totter.
For Gu, a journalist in Nanjing, everything seems to be going perfectly: he has a good job, a large, modern apartment and a pretty policewoman girlfriend. Then Yang seeks him out and demands public praise in Gu's newspaper for saving a young student from being raped. After Gu initially brushes Yang off, he finally decides to investigate the case. He finds out that Yang's old, dying father was a model worker and that his old hut is covered in awards. Yang, who has never been "recognized" for anything, wants to prove to his father before he dies that he too deserves public praise. But everything becomes more complicated when Gu befriends the alleged rape victim Ouyang Hua, a beautiful, mysterious-looking young woman. She refuses to confirm Yang's story. The further Gu is drawn into the story in his search for the truth, the more uncertain his value system seems to him and his world begins to totter.
