As part of this year's Kempowski Days, we are presenting photographs from the estate of the Rostock painter Thuro Balzer in the Rostock Town Hall.
Kempowski repeatedly refers to photographs in his texts, actively incorporating them into his literary work, both in the novels of the "German Chronicle" and for the "Echolot Project" . What happens to a literary text that expands its media spectrum by embedding photographs? embedding photographs? And what happens to a photograph that integrates a literary text on its image surface? (Anne-Kathrin Hillenbach) These are the questions we want to address.
In addition to the many eyewitness documents that fill hundreds of meters of archive shelves, Kempowski also collected everyday photographs. They often show family celebrations, but also depict the memories of a wide range of people: Christmas, birthdays...They were often testimonies of self-assertion. Walter Kempowski was fascinated by the "accidental nature of the background". In his novels, he creates cityscapes based on historical photos and embeds social history in them.
As part of this year's Kempowski Days, we are presenting photographs from the estate of the Rostock painter Thuro Balzer in the Rostock Town Hall. These views of the city are hardly known to the general public and will tell "their stories" during the exhibition period.
The town hall is open to visitors daily from 9:00-19:00.
