Photo exhibition to mark the 35th anniversary of the peaceful revolution in 1989 Parchim pictures by Willy Voß from August 29 in the Parchim Kulturmühle
The German Democratic Republic in the fall of 1989: in Parchim, too, more and more people take to the streets to express their displeasure with the political situation in the GDR. On 26 October 1989, over 6,000 people from Parchim expressed their solidarity with the mass protests in Leipzig and demanded freedom of expression and free elections in the GDR. Amateur photographer Willy Voß had his camera with him and was thus able to document the events in Parchim at the time up close. Together with contemporary witnesses, the Museum of the City of Parchim is presenting a selection of his photos.
From August 29, 2024, the welcome room of the Museum of the City of Parchim will be transformed into a photo gallery with authentic photographs from the autumn of 1989. The photographs will be presented to the public at the vernissage from 5.30 pm. The black and white photos will have a special impact due to the personal connection that many locals will have to the events of that time. Admission to the vernissage and the photo exhibition is free.
Further events with a regional focus will follow on a monthly basis to mark the 35th anniversary of the peaceful revolution. Film evenings, readings and space for personal remembrance are planned. The opening of the season of the Young State Theater Parchim on September 21 will also be dedicated to the events of autumn 1989.
