Public evening lecture by Professor Dr. Heiko Hüneke (University of Greifswald, Institute of Geography and Geology)
The lecture provides an insight into the large-scale movements of water masses in today's oceans and explains the geological research into these circulation patterns using geoscientific methods. The circulating waters carry energy, nutrients and sediments around the Earth. They shape the relief of the seabed and leave behind characteristic deposits. Comprehensive information can be derived from these sediments, such as the direction and speed of currents, the location of water mass boundaries and even the times at which oceanic passages open or close.
Heiko Hüneke is a geologist and has been a university lecturer at the University of Greifswald since 2002. He conducts research in the field of sedimentology, in particular on bioclastic deposits in the deep sea and on inland ice dynamics during the last glacial period in the southern Baltic Sea region.
Moderation: Professor Dr. Martin Meschede
