A mythical journey to the Russian Atlantis

With works by two Russian composers, Stanislav Kochanovsky, the new chief conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie and a native of St. Petersburg, turns this concert into an evening full of poetry. He opens with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's rarely heard legend, which takes us to the mythical city of Kitezh on the Volga, the Russian Atlantis. The water nymph Rusalka inspired Nikolai Medtner to compose his lyrically flowing Piano Concerto No. 3 in exile in England. Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" is a musical journey into the world of the Orient. A sultan is in the habit of killing his brides after their wedding night. Scheherazade, however, tells him stories and is still alive and kicking after 1001 nights. Rimsky-Korsakov created a suite from these stories, which also colorfully reflects the overcoming of violence through the power of poetry.
