"Peter Lurenz bi Abukir" - a novella by John Brinckmann as a musical reading with Wolfgang Rieck
A Low German sailor's yarn story in a class of its own. The story "Peter Lurenz bi Abukir" is one of the masterpieces of the Low German author John Brinckmann. This novella, written in 1868, is very much in the tradition of the sailor's tale: the merchant Peter Lurenz compensates for the petty-bourgeois normality of his provincial life in Rostock with his own fantasy adventures as a seafaring merchant, which he foists on the arch-philistine Rostock innkeeper Block.
In doing so, John Brinckmann draws on a very real person: Peter Lorenz was a well-known Rostock original who became the subject of a number of anecdotes.
The way in which a world-historical decision is turned on its head in this tall tale is a prime example of great Low German storytelling. The story will be accompanied by Low German and High German songs with a maritime inflection written by Wolfgang Rieck or based on texts by other authors.
