Painter, eccentric, genius: Edvard Munch, founder of Expressionism, is one of the most important artists of modernism. His "The Scream" is one of the most important (and most expensive!) paintings of the 20th century. But who was Edvard Munch? In four episodes, MUNCH unfolds the unique biography of a driven spirit. From the aspiring artist in Berlin at the end of the 19th century to the headstrong old man who protects his life's work from the Nazis in occupied Norway. Munch's life is interwoven with European history, characterized by huge success and catastrophic failure, euphoric ecstasy and self-destructive excess.
MUNCH is a multi-layered portrait of an unfathomable artist. Between black-and-white aesthetics and visions of the present, director Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken unfolds an intense portrait of a century, a life as a tour de force through time periods and stylistic worlds and on the hunt for the echo that still resonates with the world-famous "Scream" today.
