Caspar David Friedrich often visited Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten (1758-1818) during his hikes on the Island of Rügen. He was a pastor in Altenkirchen and also inspired the painter with his nature-loving poetry. Kosegarten studied in Greifswald, married here and later became pastor at St. Jacobi and professor at the university. In 1815, Schubert's most productive year of song composition, he set twenty of Kosegarten's poems to music. Indications in the manuscripts suggest that Schubert had a cycle in mind. cycle.
