About the lecture series "Christ the King: Perspectives on Christianization and Conquest in a European Context"
The year 2024 marks the 900th anniversary of the first of Otto von Bamberg's two missionary journeys to Pomerania. The saint known as the "Apostle of the Pomeranians" is particularly revered in this area and his importance in the Christianization of the region is emphasized. We would like to take the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Christianization processes in a European context. What do the surviving - mostly Christian - sources and artifacts tell us? What highlights can research shed on the perspective of Christianized societies? Starting from Pomerania and Otto, we will cross the continent with lectures from the Iberian Peninsula to Eastern Europe, combining approaches from various medieval disciplines such as German studies, history, art history and Scandinavian studies.
The lecture series of the Medieval Center of the University of Greifswald is sponsored by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, Essen.
