Zanzibar or the last reason
The Förderverein der Stadtbibliothek Wismar e.V., together with the Hanseatic City of Wismar, cordially invites you to the film evening Sansibar oder der letzte Grund on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the Marienkino in the tower of the Marienkirche.
Based on the novel by Alfred Andersch, in 1937, during the Nazi era, five people meet by chance in a village on the Baltic Sea: Gregor, a communist functionary from Berlin, the fisherman Knudsen, the last member of the KPD in the village, his boat boy, the Jewess Judith and the pastor Helander of the Reriker Georgenkirche, in the film the Wismar Nikolaikirche. These five people, of different origins and world views, gradually form relationships with one another. They all have one thing in common: they reject National Socialism. The focus is also on Ernst Barlach's monastery student, who was to be banned and destroyed by the Nazis as degenerate art.
In 1987, three years before the political change in the GDR, the West German filmmaker Bernhard Wicki (also known for Die Brücke) took on this subject and produced the almost three-hour film Sansibar oder der letzte Grund. The special thing about Alfred Andersch's book and Bernhard Wicki's film is that the location on the Baltic Sea is Wismar.
This film was shortened to a length of one hour by the Friends of the City Library, but in such a way that the content is completely preserved and a great deal of Wismar 1987, set in 1937, can be seen. Incidentally, the role of the priest is brilliantly played by Peter Sodann, who has just died.
The film was never shown on GDR television or in cinemas - why not? And what does Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean have to do with its title?
If you would like to find out and see the impressive images of historic Wismar, you are very welcome at the Marienkino on April 30, 2025 at 7.00 pm!
