Musical reading

Kathrin Schülein, who grew up well protected in the north of the GDR, discovered her love of dance at a very early age. She received excellent individual support for her passion for dance and received free training from the Jewish dancer and dance teacher Gret Palucca in Dresden. During trips and guest performances in the former Soviet Union, she got to know and love this country and its people. With the end of the GDR - Kathrin is just 24 years young - her "odyssey" begins. She experiences the decline of the society in which she grew up....

A few years later, her former place of work, the Metropol Theater, was also "wound up". Art and culture became a commodity. What to do now? How can you build a future in the new, alien system or simply survive?

In her book, Kathrin Schülein describes in an entertaining, vivid and sometimes humorous way the arduous, obstacle-filled path from former professional dancer to the current director and owner of Theater Ost. But the appreciation of art and culture has changed considerably in recent years. Fighting for culture to be seen not just as an appendage of bourgeois society, but to be enshrined in the constitution as a foodstuff and therefore a fundamental right, is one of Kathrin Schülein's life maxims and drives her to never give up.

Maike Virk is a classically trained violinist with guest appearances in various bands, singer and songwriter projects (Canguru, Tino Eisbrenner), on major festival stages together with Mike Keneally, Scott Thunes and as support for States Quo, Nik Kershaw... Over the years, she has refined and individualized her violin style more and more in the direction of art and acoustic rock. With her love of Eastern rock, she fits in very well with Theater Ost and its history. Both Kathrin Schülein with her book and Maike with her music tell about it.
