Frank Heimann from Thuringia sailed as a radio officer on ships of the Deutsche Seereederei Rostock from 1978 to 1989. In 1989, he embarked on a voyage to Antarctica and was part of the crew of the GDR Antarctic station "Georg Forster". It was put into operation on April 21, 1976. Work on this German research station ended in February 1993. As a radio operator, Frank Heimann experienced the political change in the GDR in the Antarctic. In his lecture "The 3rd Antarctic Expedition of the GDR" on April 10, 2025 at 4 p.m. on the traditional ship in IGA Park, he will report on life on the "Georg Forster" research station and the problems the researchers faced during their stay.
