Graduate restorer and excavation technician Jens Ulrich (State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation MV) will provide an insight into the extensive voluntary work of Heide Großnick, who has spent 50 years roaming the fields and forests, recovering archaeological material in the process. We can look forward to giant stone axes, mysterious bowl stones, chopped silver and the Arkona guard.
After moving to Rügen, Heide Großnick spent 50 years roaming the fields and forests, recovering archaeological material that bears comparison with the great collections of the 19th century. In contrast to them, however, she provided us with detailed observations of the sites and findings, which increased our knowledge of archaeological sites that are usually no longer visible. She discovered the first submarine sites, carried out emergency excavations in military security areas, worked on the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Monument Protection Act, did not avoid any disputes with the state archaeology department and, in her capacity as a teacher and lecturer, contributed greatly to the popularization of archaeology on Rügen.
