Reflections on the history of the Burg Giebichenstein School of Arts and Crafts in Halle and its protagonists during the Nazi era

Christina Brinkmann: research assistant in the art history department at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. She is researching the Nazi history of the institution as part of her dissertation.

The sculptor Gerhard Marcks, namesake and former owner and resident of today's Gerhard Marcks Künstlerhaus in Niehagen, lived and worked in Halle an der Saale until 1933. After he and other teachers were dismissed, the Burg Giebichenstein School of Arts and Crafts there continued to exist, albeit under a different name.

In her lecture, art historian Christina Brinkmann explores the extent to which the school's existence during the Nazi era was characterized by continuities and ruptures and how the lives of the teachers, including those who had to leave the so-called "Burg" in 1933, continued to develop. An attempt is made to establish a narrative that explores the nuances between the poles of ostracism/success.
