Much colonial injustice, violence and oppression has been justified with reference to "progress". Accordingly, this concept is highly controversial in the philosophy of history and in current political philosophy. However, Kant's critical definition of the idea of progress could open up insights that are important for the current discourse and the question of how we should deal with this complex concept.
Andrea Marlen Esser is Professor of Practical Philosophy at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. She is the editor of Kant's Critique of Judgment as part of the new edition of the Akademie-Ausgabe. She is also co-editor of the German Journal of Philosophy. Until 2018, Andrea Marlen Esser was Managing Director of the German Society for Philosophy. In the 2018/19 winter semester, Andrea Marlen Esser was a Senior Fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald.
