On the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust on January 27

On the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust on January 27th, the Friends of the Max Samuel House invite you to the cleaning of the memorial stones for the murdered Jews of Rostock on January 26th at 2 pm at the Max Samuel House. All association members, pupils and students are invited, as well as all interested Rostock residents and families.

The Verein der Freunde und Förderer des Max-Samuel-Hauses e.V. initiated the memorial stone project in Rostock in 2001 and has been responsible for it ever since. The aim is to erect a memorial stone in memory of the Rostock Jews who were persecuted, expelled and murdered during the National Socialist era. By the end of 2024, 87 memorial stones will have been laid in Rostock and Warnemünde at the last known places of residence of those murdered. And new memorial stones are constantly being added. According to research, around 100 women, children and men were affected by the Shoa in Rostock up to 1945. Most of them were deported to Auschwitz and murdered there.

Until 2015, natural stone slabs were laid as memorial stones. However, these were very susceptible to weathering and were often damaged during frosty winters. Brass stones have therefore been laid since 2016. However, these brass surfaces also require care in order to keep the inscriptions legible.

On 26.01.25, the memorial stones will therefore be cleaned together to remove overgrown grasses, moss and street dirt. Interested parties will also have the opportunity to learn about the fates of the people for whom the stones were laid.

At the end of November 2024, the association published the new memorial stone brochure, which contains names, photos, biographical information, city maps and background information. This gives interested parties the opportunity to find out about the 87 Rostock Jews for whom a memorial stone has been laid in Rostock at their last known place of residence.

The new brochure replaces the memorial leaflet published by the association in 2021, which contained 63 biographies. The new brochure is available at the Max Samuel House.

Interested parties are asked to bring cleaning utensils (pot sponge, vegetable brush, cloth).

After cleaning the memorial stone, the association invites all helpers to the Max Samuel House to warm up over coffee and tea and chat.
