Annual theme: "Cultural self-determination" At li.wu. (Lichtspieltheater Wundervoll) at Frieda 23 in Rostock, eight selected feature-length films and one short film will be shown, each in the original language with English or German subtitles. A lecture performance and two talks are also part of the program.
Making indigenous perspectives in cinema and beyond more visible, exchanging and discussing them - that is the aim of the film festival. This year's program of the Days of Indigenous Film takes up the annual theme of "Cultural Self-Determination", its counterpart, cultural appropriation and the debate on the restitution of cultural assets in various program items.
The film selection takes us to Panama, Brazil, Mexico, India, Nepal, Benin and Senegal. In addition to Nepal's Oscar entry for 2025, "Shambhala", the winner of this year's Golden Bear, "Dahomey" by Mati Diop, is also part of the program. This year, women as filmmakers and protagonists are a focus in a large part of the film selection, and after each film there will be the opportunity to discuss what has been seen in a moderated discussion.
In addition to the opening lecture performance by Rosa Shakur and Vincent Bababoutilabo entitled "A journey into the history of anti-racist struggles 1920 to today", Prof. Dr. Karsten Kiewitt will give a lecture on Saturday, 16.11.2024 at 16:00 entitled "From cultural discrimination to cultural self-determination. Indigenous performing arts in the 21st century". On the last day of the festival, Sunday 17 November, Prof. Dr. Albert Gouaffo will address the question "How decolonial is the language in German ethnological museums?" and give a lecture entitled "On the relationship between language and the perception of others".
