Who was Count Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly?
He was the commander of the League of Catholic Princes and one of the most famous generals of the Thirty Years' War. He first served the Spanish and learned the art of war under Alexander of Parma. He then entered the service of Lorraine and, in 1598, the Emperor. He fought against Hungarian insurgents, fought against the Turks and rose to become colonel of a Walloon regiment. During the Thirty Years' War, he and his troops emerged victorious from many battles. He marched against Neubrandenburg with 18,000 men and captured the town in 1631 amidst the most horrific slaughter.
