Painting and graphics - On the 90th birthday of Dieter Goltzsche
"Freelance artists - Dieter Goltzsche and Otto Niemeyer-Holstein"
October 19, 2024 - April 6, 2025
Goltzsche (born 1934) studied in Dresden under Hans Theo Richter (1902-1969) and Max Schwimmer (1895-1960), who took him on as a master student in 1958/59, and has worked as a freelance artist since 1960 after settling in Berlin. He was one of the most important artists in the GDR and has managed to achieve international recognition to this day. This is due to his unconditional determination to free himself from cultural-political demands. "My first personal encounter with Nino was around 1964, when we visited him in Lüttenort. Niemeyer was an unrivaled role model as a truly freelance artist - no ties to companies, commissions or anything like that." Goltzsche 2017
The exhibition is evidence of the mutual reinforcement between fellow artists at a different time. The focus here is on the consistent pursuit of one's own artistic goals against external circumstances and paternalism. "The artist wants to be free in art" wrote a member of the State Security in the opening report on the personal observation of Otto Niemeyer-Holstein.
