Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981) was already preoccupied with the motif of the crane at the age of sixteen. Over the course of his career, he created a number of sketches based on the imposing birds, as well as prints and a total of five sculptural versions, all of which are now on display for the first time in an exhibition to mark the fifth anniversary of the B14.
Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981) was already preoccupied with the motif of the crane at the age of sixteen. Over the course of his career, he produced a number of sketches after the imposing birds, as well as prints and a total of five sculptural versions. The sculptor's interest was multifaceted. He was well versed in ornithology, was familiar with the symbolic meanings of the crane and, above all, appreciated its form as a sculptural challenge. To mark the fifth anniversary of the B14, Marcks' cranes are moving back to the Baltic Sea. For the first time, all five sculptures will be shown in one exhibition. We would like to thank the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus, Bremen, for the idea and curation and the private lenders.
