AND ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY... !
To mark the 150th anniversary of his birth, the Schwaan Art Museum is planning an exhibition on the work and influence of Otto Bartels in 2024.
Otto Bartels was born on December 4, 1874 in Schwaan, the son of master potter Carl Bartels. He learned the profession of wood sculptor in Rostock. Subsequent study trips took him to Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Göttingen, Cologne, Koblenz, Wiesbaden, Leipzig and Berlin. From 1895, Otto worked together with his brother Carl, sculpting ceilings and walls with mortar and plaster. Among other things, they accepted commissions for the Bavarian Parliament, the Imperial Court in Leipzig and the residential palace of the Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. After military service in the First World War, Otto Bartels attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Hanover and then the State Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar, where he majored in portrait painting. After returning to Rostock, he increasingly devoted himself to painting, producing portraits, landscapes and still lifes. After the death of his siblings, his apartment in Rostock was confiscated and he went into an old people's home, where he died in 1958. The Schwaan Art Museum dedicates an exhibition to his 150th birthday, which also includes the premiere of a musical composition by the artist.
