Photography
Holger Herschel, born in 1959, studied sociology and has been working as a freelance photographer since 1992. He works primarily in the fields of architecture, monument preservation and portraiture. He has also published a number of books on these subjects. Schwarze Pumpe 1991, Altes Eisen 1990 and 1993 and Stein auf Stein 1986 to 2024 are selected here from an extensive collection on these topics. With Schwarze Pumpe, they show the beginning of the explosive structural change in Lusatia. The places Schwarze Pumpe, Hoyerswerda, Spremberg - with still active lignite mining - seem to have fallen out of time and are saved from their transience by the photographic works. Holger Herschel's works are based on a melancholy of disappearance. His motifs focus on deserted places and portraits marked by everyday life, his pictorial perspective on stretched and peripheral spaces.
