Funeral and mourning culture around 1800: an art and cultural history illustrated lecture
Caspar David Friedrich repeatedly dealt with the end of life, which can be clearly seen in his oeuvre. The fact that the funeral culture and conceptions of death of the time are also being addressed in the painter's anniversary year, is therefore only a logical consequence. In an illustrated lecture, art historian Dr. Anja Kretschmer brings to life how death underwent a change in interpretation during the Romantic period. In the course of a transfiguration, death was reinterpreted as an eternally sweet sleep. C. D. Friedrich's paintings make it clear how death and the culture of mourning took on an equally individual and personally intimate image. Kiste e.V.
