"The story of Franz and Alex from Satow" "Typical 'gypsies'? Myths and realities" (excerpts)

Sinti and Roma - a topic that is still full of prejudice, clichés and racism today. Sinti and Roma - persecuted, marginalized and romanticized for centuries. Sinti and Roma - a topic on which many have an opinion, but few know anything about. Sinti and Roma - yes, they are the others ... somewhere else ... Really?

Sinti and Roma were part of the population in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for centuries, yet they were subject to mistrust and prejudice and always struggled for recognition. They lived in towns and villages, traded, were craftsmen, agricultural workers, cattle dealers and showmen, and were sometimes accepted members of the middle classes.

For a long time, they hardly played a role in coming to terms with the crimes of the Nazi era. With its research into the Sinti and Roma in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the RAA Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's "zeitlupe" history workshop has helped to raise awareness of this part of our history. Among other things, a graphic novel was created in collaboration with artist Anna-Friederike C. Pöschel, which tells the story of two children's fates from the Waren region. "The story of Franz and Alex from Satow" - originally developed as an interactive eBook - is presented in the form of a small exhibition at the City History Museum.

Countering clichés and prejudices through education is the approach of the second exhibition "Typical 'Gypsies'? Myths and realities", which can only be shown in excerpts due to lack of space. It was created by "RomnoKher", the Sinti & Roma regional association of Baden-Württemberg.

In cooperation with the European Academy MV, the zeitlupe history workshop and the specialist support center for Rom*nja refugees (RAA - Demokratie und Bildung MV)
