How do we make sustainable education the focus of future concepts?

What kind of education suits us? How do we design central living spaces where people can learn well? How do children and young people learn participation and responsibility? What opportunities for participation does the education system offer? Where is there room for experiences of self-efficacy? And where is there not? Should young people determine the structure and form of their education themselves? What damage has isolation during the coronavirus pandemic done to them? How do we make sustainable education the focus of future concepts? What expectations does society have of the qualifications gained?

A film screening of "Everyone is talking about the weather" is planned, followed by a panel discussion. Anke Ristau (Headmistress Neubrandenburg), Oliver Hohlfeld (media educator, UM Challenge), Ariane Vanhauer (founder of Freie Naturschule Peckatel) and Martina Herre (theater educator) are invited. We look forward to exciting discussions with the audience.

The event will be accompanied by our speaker Matthias Heyl. He was born in Hamburg in 1965. Heyl studied history, psychology and educational science and completed a doctorate with a comparative study on "Education after Auschwitz" in Germany, the Netherlands, Israel and the USA. Matthias Heyl is the author of books and essays on pedagogical approaches to the history of the Holocaust. From 1998 to 2002, he was head of the research and work center "Education after/about Auschwitz" in Hamburg. Since 2002, he has been head of the Ravensbrück Youth Meeting Center at the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation. In 2022, his services to historical education and critical examination of the crimes of the Nazi dictatorship were honored with the Brandenburg Volunteer Award.

About the venue: KUNSTHAUS Neustrelitz e.V. was founded in 2007 and was then based at Schloßstraße 6 in Neustrelitz. The founding of the association was preceded by a series of "cultural activities". The town of Neustrelitz, which owned the property, supported the project by making the premises available free of charge. The idea of continuing to use the KUNSTHAUS in this listed building for cultural events was the reason for founding the association. "Everyone should have the opportunity to participate in cultural education!" - The children's and youth art school in the Kunsthaus Neustrelitz is committed to this approach. Even the youngest children can experiment in the various studios and workshops in courses with artist lecturers in the fields of painting and drawing, film, animation and comics, graffiti, printmaking, ceramics, theater, sculpture, radio drama, textile design, dance, etc. and go on a journey of discovery in an open process. However, the program does not only focus on trying out artistic techniques, but also on dealing with a wide variety of topics within the framework of an artistic process and the associated means of expression. The children get into conversation, work together in teams, articulate their own opinions - also artistically - and also learn how to conduct non-violent conflicts. In this way, the examination of their own identity, what they have experienced, the future and the other flows into the artistic work and leaves visible traces, with the help of which children can experience self-effective action in a very practical way.
