Painting and light objects by Dörte Spengler
Dörte Spengler's studio is located in beautiful Mecklenburg, in the village of Plate. Art is an inseparable part of your life, it has always been there and will probably accompany you until your last breath. Life means constant change. I can decide every day in which direction I want to go.
And just as my life is constantly changing, the way I express myself on canvas has also changed, creating an ever greater variety.
My paintings take time, usually weeks, sometimes months. They consist of 10 - 15 layers. Each layer has its own meaning, even if the lower layers are barely perceptible to the eye.
They form the foundation on the canvas, so to speak. Here you often find structuring materials, because I want the picture to "live" or in other words - there should be movement on the canvas.
From layers 5-7, the colors play an increasingly important role. They correspond with each other, give each other space or take it away again in the course of the process.
Only when I have achieved a coherent overall structure on the canvas can I consider it finished.
I find this unique form of expression in abstract and intuitive painting in particular. And in this respect, this type of art is highly personal and individual.
I myself am curious about the next few years and the further development of my works.
But because painting sometimes requires a creative break, I use the time to create light sculptures from natural materials. They present themselves as atmospheric and harmonious unique pieces that seek their place in an independent and self-confident manner. They are mainly made of wood and paper, so they fit in with the current zeitgeist and also create special accents in the rooms where they find a home.
I use burl wood, driftwood or other woods for the base of the sculpture. They are and remain untreated and are allowed to show their very own individuality.
All lights are operated exclusively with LEDs and a standard power supply. They are expressly not reading lamps, but mood lights that create a wonderfully cozy atmosphere.
