Novel about Gottfried Benn and Else Lasker-Schüler | Christof Kessler
The main protagonist is the doctor and expressionist poet Gottfried Benn. The novel is set in 1913, in the run-up to the First World War. As a young doctor, Gottfried Benn visited the island of Hiddensee and stayed there for 18 days. The remote Baltic Sea island became a meeting place for Berlin intellectuals, who sought out the island's unspoiled, secluded nature and were also attracted by the permissiveness of life on the beach. During his time on Hiddensee, Gottfried Benn had time to reflect on his current situation and make plans for the future. He decided to end his relationship with his partner, Else Lasker-Schüler, and met his future wife, Edith Osterloh, there.
"Entscheidung auf Hiddensee" is published by Lübecker Rote Katze Verlag, named after Heinrich Mann's favorite pub in Lübeck. This is where the Blue Angel plays with Marlene Dietrich. The book can be ordered directly from the publisher: https://rotekatzeverlag.de/.
